My boss reprimanded me for my cheesy out-of-office emails – my personality is being drowned out by corporate America

Is she out of pocket for these out of office emails?

A corporate employee has sparked controversy after discovering her boss reprimanded her for writing creative emails outside the office while taking time off.

In a viral video posted on TikTok, which has garnered 1.9 million views, Thara Moise, who also works as a professional chef, admitted that she has received a lot of “talking down” from her boss because of her “unprofessional” announcements. .

“I’ve been writing these emails outside of the office and they’re really cool,” she said, explaining that she envisions “fun, little stories about adventures involving squirrels and sharks” that recipients can read “when I’m not there. .”

According to Moise, her boss said her out-of-office notes were “not funny” or “professional” and asked her to stop doing “stupid things like that.”

In response, Moise said she started making her stories outside the office “more serious,” which still didn’t sit well with the head honcho.

Then, after a second scolding, she tried to make her emails more educational, offering “wellness tips,” such as ways to stretch while sitting at a desk or practicing mindfulness during work.

Again, her boss criticized the e-mails for being inappropriate for the workplace.

“How is an out of office email unprofessional?” Moise cried out, complaining that her “personality is being drowned out by corporate America.”

“It’s literally just a fun, little, quirky story and you’re saying it’s unprofessional — how is it unprofessional?”

Thousands of viewers, however, were quick to inform Moise that she was wrong, explaining that her boss likely wanted a simple email whenever she was out of the office.

“He gave you three warnings. Just leave it as a simple OOO [out-of-office] email before you’re forever in OOO,” one person wrote.

“Imagine sending an urgent email to someone and their automated response was a story instead of telling you who to contact while they were out,” another user fumed.

“How often are you OOO who make up so many stories,” quipped one person, while another advised him to start journaling or blogging.

“This is not the job market to be played in,” warned another.

Despite the humorous out-of-office emails trending among Gen Z employees, experts were divided on the appropriateness of Moise’s notes.

Speaking to Business Insider, some agreed that while they make boring emails more enjoyable, there’s a delicate balance between playful and professional, and employees can risk being fired if they continue to disobey a manager’s demands.

Others, however, disagreed with Moise’s boss.

“From the sender’s perspective, receiving an OOO is usually not a good experience,” Rich Mehta, founder of Rigorous Digital, told Business Insider.

“Surprising someone with what might otherwise be a slightly pointless experience introduces dissonance, which usually means you’ll be remembered.”
